Many Happy returns of the day

What does it mean?

Hareesh made me think about it. I ended up with two cases after lots of thinking.

1. Hope that you get a lot of gifts

2. Hope that this day comes again and again very happily.

Sticking to the second one, as it makes more sense I believe.
